“I am very happy with my website. I particularly appreciated Tema’s understanding of the arts and creative industry, and the well-defined structure and process of the Small Website custom website package. The 2-week design period (and the preceding preparation work) was exactly what I needed to overcome my procrastination in getting a website.”

Summary
Milon Tesiram is a New Zealand cinematographer working across narrative, factual, music videos and commercials. In the preparation stage, we identified that his main website goal was to make a strong impression on visitors. He favoured having a dark website with understated text that would put focus on his cinematographic work.
This was a nice design challenge as white-on-black portfolio sites are trending among directors of photography and directors, but require a lot of subtle design to make a site distinctive enough to stand out from the crowd.
Moreover, with fewer elements on the page, every design element must be carefully considered. For instance, after some testing, I turned the horizontal lines into gradients that guide the eye from left to right, eventually drawing visitors towards the main call-to-action, “Let’s chat”.
It was through being inspired by Milon’s love of nature that I developed the foundation for his site’s visual identity, in particular the green colour palette. Colour is such an effective way to add a touch of personality to any portfolio website and Milon was happy with the dark/light balance we landed on between the dark colours and cinematographic imagery.
We also wanted the portfolio to be super intuitive to explore by interest. This led me to design the carousels that sit below each project, guiding visitors to view more projects from the same category.
“I really appreciated Tema’s blend of technical expertise and design sensibility - as well as her responsiveness and focus while we worked on the site.”
